Ghost flagged a taxi and climbed in. “The corporate building of Atlantican Enterprise Systems.” He ran the application through his mind a third time. Everything was in order. The vehicle stopped at the requested destination. He paid the driver and got out of the cab, then waited for the car to turn the corner before glancing up at the building. He walked inside the main lobby and found the receptionist. He glanced at the name on her tag. “Alicia, my name is Anthony Walker. I have an appointment with Mr. Sampson.”

The female human smiled coyly. “Just a minute, sir. I’ll ring you through.” She picked up a phone and whispered into the receiver.

Within minutes, a tall Ljósálfar wearing a security guard uniform stepped out. “Mr. Walker, I’m Jarek, a security guard.” After a quick handshake, he spun on his heels. “Come with me, sir.”

Ghost followed the man into a small office to the right.

“This is just a precaution, sir.” The guard pointed to a metal frame. “Please step through the scanner.”

“You might want to hold this.” Ghost pulled out a small caliber gun and held it on his palm. “Just a safeguard for out on the street, mind you.”

Jarek took the gun. “Understood, sir.”

Ghost stepped through the scanning device and back out when the green light flashed.

The guard nodded and returned the small weapon to its owner. “I’ll take you to Mr. Sampson now, sir.”

Ghost followed him to the elevator, boarded, and watched Jarek press the number eight. After they exited on the eighth floor, the guard led him to the end of the hall and then knocked on a door. The guard stepped aside and opened the door.

Ghost entered the room and quickly glanced at the surroundings.

The man in the chair kept his back toward them. “Come in, Mr. Walker. I’ve been reading your application again, and I like what I see. Can you tell me something not on your resume’?”

Ghost walked over and stood at the desk. “Sir, I’ve been thinking about your situation with the company, and I think I might have a few ideas to boost your profits.”

“Confidence. I like that in my CEO. I’ve set up a place for you in the company complex, and Christopher will be more than happy to show you around. He’s waiting for you in the outer office.” Mr. Sampson smiled at him wryly. “That is if you accept the job at ten thousand credits a month?”

“I accept. When do I start?”

“I’ll have Christopher set you up tomorrow morning at nine. Will that be adequate?”

“Yes, sir. I’ll be here promptly.” Ghost headed to the other room.

The human waiting in the outer office nodded. “My name is Christopher Wagoner. If you follow me, sir, I’ll show you to your living quarters.”

Ghost followed the man back to the elevator and up two more flights. He sized Christopher up. The man wore western garb, was six-foot tall, looked about twenty-three years old and had well-defined muscles. His short hair was auburn with copper streaks and matched his neatly trimmed beard and mustache.
